Sailors Childrens Society

Sailors’ Children’s Society

About us

Families come to us usually after a traumatic event such as bereavement, diagnosis of a terminal illness or the breakdown of a marital relationship. We provide ongoing support for the children until the family is again self-sufficient or until the children have left full time education. All the families we help are on a means tested benefit which ensures we only help those in most need.

The Society is funded via donations, legacies, local fundraising events, trusts and grants such as Seafarers UK, Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and Trinity House. In these uncertain economic times the funding we receive from our major funders and Trusts is extremely important to us. Without this funding we would struggle to help all of our existing families and also seafaring families in the future.

Fundraising is about you as an individual, employee or employer bringing some fun and a challenge whilst raising funds for the Society.  Many fundraising events have been postponed or cancelled this year due to the pandemic.  Whilst we are hopeful our events will go ahead next year, many charities across the UK have been left struggling to maintain their services.

Due to COVID, the Sailors' Children's Society have extended their support to fishermen who have been unable to work due to the fishmarkets having to close.  We have also given a computer package to over 100 of our supported families to ensure our children are able to continue with their school work at home during and after lockdown.  The Society has also given a small weekly grant to cover the additional cost of food and heating whilst the children were at home.
